Head of News

Role Description

Contact Lucy Baldwin for any questions regarding the role: newsproducer@paltv.co.uk

Head News/Factual Producer is an extremely fun and engaging role where you work closely with the Section Heads and especially the Head Producer to create varied and hard-hitting news content.

You’ll lead a news team (made up of producers, presenters, cam ops and editors) as well as working with other people in the station on timely reports and large scale out of team projects (such as the Housing Crisis Documentary and PalTV Debates). You will also oversee all news content within the station that you are not leading the team on. Finally, you will be responsible (alongside the Palatinate Editors in Chief and the Station Manager) for ensuring the station complies with media law.

We’re looking for someone with an enthusiasm for news, good knowledge of where to find stories and great ideas to take our news output to the next level. News is the most successful section in the station and we won a NaSTA in News and Current Affairs this year so we’d like to continue this success! Our news content has also been featured on national news and last year the Head of News was interviewed by ITV, so it is important that you are committed to this role and to representing the station at its best.

However - don’t let this put you off! Being Head of News at PalTV is not just a big responsibility, it is also a huge opportunity. Genuine interest in news and a passion for this role will get you a long way, regardless of experience (although this is also great!). Good luck with your applications!

Necessary skills:

  • Passion for news and telling the stories that matter
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build rapport with team members
  • Attending weekly Section Heads and full team meetings (2 hours per week)
  • Ability to manage and contribute to extra projects, whether breaking news or bigger projects such as PalTV debates
  • Strong organisational skills both organising yourself and others, reliability
  • Ability to guide others through the production process, overseeing projects and providing advice
  • Willingness to try new things and contribute and hunt out creative and insightful project ideas
  • Alertness to current news and matters of interest within the University and County Durham
  • Quick responsiveness and availability within reason over Slack
  • Liaising with Palatinate news team to ensure all breaking news is covered in reasonable time and in appropriate formats (e.g. deciding whether the story would work best as a written piece, video, or both) and over media law issues

Preferable skills:

(Do not worry if you don’t have all of these yet, these are simply skills that would add to your application if you possess them already. Regardless of your specific skills and experience we would still encourage you to apply if you are enthusiastic about the roles).

  • Editing skills (any level) - we use DaVinci Resolve but any editing experience would be amazing
  • Media law knowledge - ideally media law trained by PalTV/Palatinate
  • Previous experience on PalTV News projects
